July 14, 2022 concluded a four-week open house IC Controls held at its facility in Orangeville Ontario. Bringing together people from engineering firms, municipalities, water and wastewater treatment plants, it demonstrated new analyzers from Thermo Scientific Orion and provided a sneak peek at its new digital sensor platform currently in development.
Measure in wastewater plants on influent and aeration basin effluent in addition to final effluent for regulatory compliance monitoring.
The new Orion 8010cX analyzer uses the automated phenate method to measure Total Ammonia Nitrogen (TAN) between 0.02 and 500 mg/ L With auto-clean functionality and an available pre-filter, the 8010cX can be used in wastewater plants on influent and aeration basin effluent in addition to final effluent for regulatory compliance monitoring. Attendees responded positively to features that reduce maintenance cost and improve ease of use on wet chemistry analyzers – for example, a single syringe pump is used to manage the delivery of all fluids and reagent use is only 2L per 100 d based on a 2 hour measurement interval.
Detecting residual oxidants, such as chlorine, down to 0.001 mg/ L
Complementing the 8010cX was the 7070iX Total Residual Oxidant (TRO) capable of detecting residual oxidants, such as chlorine, down to 0.001 mg/ L. The unique chemistry and measurement technology involved in the operation of this analyzer was explained in detail during the presentation session. The use of Ion Selective Electrodes (ISEs) is key to achieving this level of detection. Versus previous generations, the 7070iX allows users greater flexibility in how the analyzer is set up and an enhanced flow cell that incorporates cleaning beads to extend maintenance intervals. Ed Crossland, VP of Orion Products noted “The new 7070iX TRO Analyzer now allows users to measure at intervals up to 30 minutes, or have measurement triggered by a remote signal, thereby reducing reagent consumption where a continuous measurement is not required”.
ROSS pH Sensor for both ultrapure water and industrial process water
Thermo Scientific Orion ROSS pH technology was also on display in configurations for both ultrapure water and for industrial process water. The unique reference chemistry of the ROSS pH sensor allows it to respond with much greater accuracy than conventional pH sensors where temperature variation is an issue. ROSS is the industry “gold standard” for lab electrodes and is now available for continuous online measurement with the Process ROSS pHR Sensor and the 2001SC pH Sensor for ultrapure water.
Open architecture digital pH measurement platform
In addition to the Orion products featured in the demonstrations, IC Controls also gave attendees a first look at its open architecture digital pH measurement platform. Building on completely open standards, the platform will enable flexibility with sensor choice and facilitate the implementation of IOTT strategies through its use of an open, lightweight communications protocol.
