A flexible, space-efficient solution that allows plants to take advantage of the Orion 2230XP intelligent flow monitoring and IC Controls’ purpose-built touchscreen interface for sample sequencing operation.

The Thermo Scientific Orion 2030 silica analyzer (Initially released as the Orion 2030 silica monitor from Thermo Electron Corporation) was released in the early 2000’s. It featured up to 6 stream sampling and 0 to 500 ppb measuring range with a 0.5 ppb limit of detection. The latest iteration of the Thermo Scientific Orion silica analyzer is the 2230XP featuring 0 to 5000 ppb measuring and intelligent flow monitoring that manages reagent consumption automatically. The latter feature was developed for plants that run intermittently in order to minimize costs associated with reagent consumption and maintenance. For complete details on the 2230XP – see 2230XP product page. Overall, the 2230XP makes significant advancements over the 2030 in both measurement and maintenance robustness.

To enable multi-stream sampling on up to 4 sample streams, the 2230XP needs to be combined with a sample sequencing device such as the IC Controls’ 535 sample sequencer – see 535 product page or 535-2 product page. This allows users to enjoy the benefits of the new Orion 2230XP without having to sacrifice multi-stream sampling (up to 4 streams). Also the Orion 2230XP includes storage for the reagents that are in-use within the cabinet unlike the 2030.

Installation Space

The 2230XP with 535 is a space-efficient solution that occupies only slightly greater width (just over 3 inches/ 75 mm) with approximately the same overall height. Considering reagent storage, the 2030 consumes considerably more space. If sample sequencing is only required on 2 streams, the 535 configuration reduces in width by approximately 3 inches making the footprint of the two analyzers virtually identical. Furthermore, the 535 is not limited to being placed in this specific location. It is recommended to keep it as close to the analyzer as possible to ensure sample integrity, however.

Interface/ Connections

The conversion from the 2030 to the 2230XP in routing various electrical, I/O and fluid connections is relatively simple. A summary of the various connections is shown in figure 3. Generally, fluids enter the bottom of the analyzers and power is supplied to the right side near the top of the analyzers. The 535 has an added electrical connection, however it requires low power (40 watt power supply).  The connections between the analyzer and the 535 can be factory-installed when supplied with a back panel, or made with pre-configured cables. Moreover, the 2030 can be easily replaced by the 2230XP and the 535 in most cases.

535 Advantages

The 535 interface was specifically optimized for Thermo Scientific Orion analyzers and complements the analyzer interface to simplify of sample sequencing setup and operation. Default parameters suitable for use with analyzers such as the 2230XP are available to allow users to get up and running quickly. The 4.3” color touchscreen depicted in figure 5 provides information on the current measurement and sample stream status at a glance. Having additional information at hand can ease troubleshooting by reducing the need to navigate back and forth between menus on the analyzer.
